A tabela ASCII foi desenvolvida na década de 60 e é utilizada para representar texto em sistemas computacionais. Tenha em mente que o computador entende apenas valores binários e como tal deve passar por uma conversão quando apresentado ao usuário.

Originalmente a tabela ASCII conta com 128 sinais, sendo 95 gráficos e 33 sinais de controle utilizando assim apenas 7 bits. Entretanto com o avanço tecnológico atribuído aos monitores de vídeo foram adicionados mais 128 símbolos desenvolvendo então uma extensão para a tabela ASCII com um total de 256 caracteres. Para isso bastou utilizar um bit extra fazendo que que agora os códigos ASCII sejam formados por um conjunto de 8 bits.
